Heroin use on the rise again

imagesPlaces all over the country like suburban New Jersey, Eastern Washington, Baltimore, and Utah are suffering a major problem: the use of heroin, particularly in teenagers, is on the rise. A trend that is decreasing in many urban parts of the US, due to rehabilitation programs, addiction treatments, and lower demand, are skyrocketing in the country’s more suburban areas. Why? Part of the problem is that enforcing drug laws is extraordinarily difficult with heroin., Heroin’s popularity knows no preferred class, religion, neighborhood, race, or creed. Often with other narcotics patterns emerge among the users that police can follow, but heroin addiction is so widespread that law enforcement doesn’t know where to start. The dangers of heroin use are widely known. It’s one of the most addictive substances on the planet, and the death toll is frighteningly high. Unlike some other addictive substances, which can stem from social use, heroin is often a solitary drug, making it even more dangerous when overdoses occur. So what can we do to help a friend in trouble, or just learn more? ifInew has a wealth of resources on the topic: http://www.ifiknewthen.org/?page_id=526
